Position Overiew
The Recruit Game Warden participates in the 22-week Arizona College Law Enforcement Academy (AWCLETA) training program in Yuma to learn the general duties of police work. Upon graduation, the Game Warden will participate in 10 weeks of Field Training.

Minimum Qualifications
Must be a U. S. Citizen and high school graduate or have a GED. Must be at least 21 years of age at the completion of AZ P.O.S.T. BASIC TRAINNIG CURRICULUM. By the starting date, must be a resident of the state of Arizona and possess a valid Arizona driver license.
Employees who are hired into the classification prior to the start of the training academy will be placed at step 1 of the salary range. All employees in the classification will be placed at step 2 of the salary range while actively assigned to the training academy.

Job Description
Salary
A recruit warden earns a salary of $17,825.60 while in basic training academy (approximately 22 weeks). Upon graduation and certification, recruits are promoted to game warden (entry level), with an annual salary of $45,926.40
Qualified Certified Officers who laterally transfer to the agency may receive an annual salary, based on the number of full-time years of experience* (patrol and criminal investigative duties) of $45,926.40.

Those who wish to compete as a Certified Officer must additionally meet the following qualifications (supporting documentation required).

Possess an AZ POST Peace Officer Certification or other federal/state certification in good standing

Served a probationary period and/or have been in a permanent position for a minimum of three years

Have been employed as a police officer within the last 18 months
Selection Process
Note: applicant must pass each step of the process before moving on to the next step, except for the physical fitness test. Failure of a fitness test will not restart an applicant’s process or prevent him/her from completing other steps.

Written examination – Applicant must pass a multiple choice test with a minimum score of 70%.

Physical fitness test – The test will consist of the POPAT

Polygraph examination – Applicant must successfully complete a polygraph examination.

Background investigation – Applicant must pass a background investigation which includes a history of the applicant’s driving, civil and criminal records, employment, and use of illegal substances.

Physical Fitness
The applicant will test in five areas consisting of the following
99-YARD OBSTACLE COURSE Run a 99-yard obstacle course consisting of several sharp turns, a number of curb height obstacles, and a 34-inch high obstacle that must be vaulted.
BODY DRAG Lift and drag 165-pound, lifelike dummy 32 feet.
CHAIN-LINK FENCE Run five yards to a six-foot, chain-link fence, climb over fence, continue running another 25 yards.
SOLID FENCE CLIMB Run five yards to a six-foot solid fence, climb over fence, continue running another 25 yards.
500-YARD RUN Run 500 yards (equivalent to one lap plus 60 yards of a standard running track)
A minimum score of 384 points must be obtained to demonstrate sufficient physical ability to perform as a patrol officer.

Ride Along
At least one ride along with a warden is highly recommended, but not required. The ride along application (which must be completed by the applicant and approved by a supervisor prior to the applicant being scheduled by F&G for a ride along) can be downloaded below. The completed ride along application must be retuned to the Fish & Game office in relation to where you would like to do your ride along.
LATER APPLICANTS
Lateral applicants who meet the qualifications for a State Peace Officer Certification will be required to attend a 10-week transition period to learn the basics of being a Tribal Game Warden. CRIT Fish and Game also offers a lateral program for certified out-of-state peace officers who meet the minimum standards, including graduation from an academy plus successfully completing 90 days of probation. Officers will have to submit training records and qualifying paperwork. Final approval is determined by the Arizona Peace Officer Standards and Training Board (AZ POST). Laterals will participate in Field Training upon graduation for 7-10 weeks.
To become a CRIT Game Warden, in-state lateral applicants are required to pass a firearms qualification and Qualification Appraisal Board (QAB) in order to be placed on the 18-month eligibility list. Once on the eligibility list, lateral officers will need to pass a polygraph examination, medical examination, and must pass a physical fitness test or the Peace Officer Physical Aptitude Test (POPAT) within 90 days of initial testing date. If a lateral does not pass the firearms qualification or QAB portion of the testing process can retest at the next testing date.

SUMMARY STATMENT
This recruitment will be used to establish an eligibility list for current and future Recruit Game Warden vacancies. Recruit Game Wardens Participate in Arizona Peace Officer Standards and Training (AZ P.O.S.T.) Basic Training Curriculum and other training designated by the Department of Fish & Game to learn general duty warden/police work. Performs related duties as assigned. Upon successful completion of training and certification as a peace officer by AZ P.O.S.T., the recruit is reclassified to Game Warden. This is a competitive classification.
Duty assignments are within the exterior boundaries of the CRIT Reservation in Arizona and California. General duty assignments will not be made until after successful completion of training and certification as a peace officer by AZ P.O.S.T.
